Herald Extra: ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Firefly’ and ‘Merlin’ among fandoms to take center stage at Salt Lake Comic Con 2017

(Herald Extra) When superheroes, comic book stars and movie icons converge on the State Capitol in Salt Lake City, you know it’s time to start talking about Salt Lake Comic Con again.

On Wednesday, event co-founders Dan Farr and Bryan Brandenburg met with a gathering of pop culture fanatics, press and, since it was at the Capitol, politicians, to kick off the planning, events and guest announcements for Salt Lake Comic Con’s Sept. 21-23 convention at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City.

The Wednesday press conference brought with it the announcement of over 33 new guests, including a solid mixture of best-selling authors, artists and film and television stars such as Val Kilmer (“Batman Forever,” “Top Gun,” “Tombstone”) Catherine Tate (“Doctor Who,” “The Office”), Wil Wheaton (“Stand By Me,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”), John Barrowman (“Doctor Who,” “Torchwood”) Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future,” “Taxi,” “Granite Flats”) and more.

“It’s a great start for sure,” Brandenburg said in an interview with the Daily Herald following the press conference. “People will start to see some themes. We’re really strong in ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ … and ‘Back to the Future.’ We also have calls out for additional cast members,” Brandenburg said of the potential to bring more “Back to the Future” stars to the September event. “People are really loving it on social media, saying things like ‘I cried when that guest got announced.’ Stuff like that makes you feel like you really did your job.”
